Mistreated Disabled Inmate Obtains a $405K Settlement Against Two Sheriffs, Private Prison Company

Our client was detained for more than a year while awaiting trial. During that time, he spent months in debilitating pain at Jackson Parish Correctional Center, a facility managed by the Ruston-based LaSalle Management Company, after a fall at another local jail left him severely injured.

He was denied physical therapy, and was often forced to drag himself across prison floors when guards deprived him of his wheelchair.

The continued negligence and mistreatment only made his disability more painful.

Numerous sick calls and please for help were disregarded.

It was only after his release that he was able to get the medical treatment his condition required.

The Court accepted a magistrate judge’s report and recommendation denying Defendants’ motion for summary judgment. See: Carter v. Derr, 2019 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 117416 (W.D. La.).

Thereafter, we were able to obtain more than $400,000 as part of a settlement against the two sheriffs’ offices and a private for profit prison management company. You may here for the story as covered by The Advocate, or here for the story as covered by Prison Legal News.
